Carpet of Flying 5e

January 14, 2024

Carpet of Flying 5e

Wondrous Item, very rare

You can speak the carpet's command word as an action to make the carpet hover and fly. It moves according to your spoken directions, provided that you are within 30 feet of it.

Four sizes of carpet of flying exist. The DM chooses the size of a given carpet or determines it randomly.

Carpet of Flying Size Table

Size Capacity Flying Speed
3 ft. x 5 ft. 200 lb. 80 feet
4 ft. x 6 ft 400 lb. 60 feet
5 ft. x 7 ft. 600 lb. 40 feet
6 ft. x 9 ft. 800 lb. 30 feet

A carpet can carry up to twice the weight shown on the table, but it flies at half speed if it carries more than its normal capacity.

Commentary by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold

They aren’t complicated, but my goodness they are iconic; Carpets of Flying goes hand in hand with a mid tier D&D party like peanut butter and jelly. All versions of them can be a major asset to the team, especially teams that lack a lot of flight capabilities.

  • Carpets don’t require a character attune to them to fly them, but do require a command word to use; Identify can give the team that command word which enables everyone to use it as needed.

  • While anyone who speaks the command word can fly it, the carpet doesn’t fly at the exact time the command is given; it moves in the fashion directed by its last given command, usually on initiative count 20 or a designated turn.

  • Flying carpets reward being light; small groups can huddle together and zip around, while heavy paladins will struggle to share even the largest carpets with their allies.
