Eyes of Charming 5e

July 20, 2023

Eyes of Charming 5e

Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)

These crystal lenses fit over the eyes. They have 3 charges. While wearing them, you can expend 1 charge as an action to cast the Charm Person spell (save DC 13) on a humanoid within 30 feet of you, provided that you and the target can see each other. The lenses regain all expended charges daily at dawn.

Commentary by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold

Fancy goggles for a fancy person; the Eyes of Charming are a tool for the socialite of the group who eagerly seeks out sweet talking as a method of discovering information about the world and adventure. They require attunement, but otherwise, offer anyone a DC 13 Charm Person three times per day. What’s not to love?

  • Magic items that replicate spells have some important rules to keep in mind in play:

    • Spells cast using magic items are always cast at their lowest slot level unless otherwise stated.

    • There aren’t many ways in the game to increase the DC of items like Eyes of Charming, as it uses the item’s DC, and doesn’t interact with your own spellcasting features.

    • Casting spells with magic items requires none of the components the spell normally requires!

  • Because you don’t need to make the verbal or somatic components Charm Perosn normally requires, there is a little extra discretion when charming people in crowded places. They’ll still know after you charmed them, but others will be less likely to pick up on what’s happening.
