Eyes of the Eagle 5e

July 20, 2023

Eyes of the Eagle 5e

Wondrous Item, uncommon (requires attunement)

These crystal lenses fit over the eyes. While wearing them, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight. In conditions of clear visibility, you can make out details of even extremely distant creatures and objects as small as 2 feet across.

Commentary by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold

Are you the scout tasked with running ahead and looking for danger over great swaths of land? Eyes of the Eagle may be the perfect tool for you. While not the most fashionable item in the world, these glasses provide eagle vision for making out exact details of anything in your field of view.

  • The advantage to Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight aren’t contingent on distance or any other factor. While you’re attuned to this and wearing it, you’ve got that bonus.

  • “Conditions of clear visibility” to me basically means anything unobscured, or to use game terms, not within light or heavy obscurity.

  • “Extremely distant” has less gamified language we can translate from, but I take it basically mean if you can see it, you can make out details as small as 2 feet across. Smaller details still can be challenging to discern, though.

  • If you want a tool for empowering looking up close, Eyes of Minute Seeing are the brother item to this in terms of eyewear that enhances visions. Together, they make magical bifocals!
