Oil of Etherealness 5e

November 27, 2023

Oil of Etherealness 5e

Potion, rare

Beads of this cloudy gray oil form on the outside of its container and quickly evaporate. The oil can cover a Medium or smaller creature, along with the equipment it's wearing and carrying (one additional vial is required for each size category above Medium). Applying the oil takes 10 minutes. The affected creature then gains the effect of the Etherealness spell for 1 hour.

Commentary by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold

Etherealness is a beast of a spell; getting access to it, even for just a short time, can lead to some spectacular plans and escapes. This oil is worth investing in if you can afford it.

  • Moving while ethereal somewhat ignores gravity, with the only penalty for going up and down being a higher cost to movement.

  • While ethereal, you can still see onto the material plane you left, but creatures on that plane typically can’t see you back.

  • Moving through objects doesn’t impact your speed, making this oil exceptional for infiltration and scouting around wide, heavily defended areas quickly.

  • You gain the effect of the etherealness spell; you don’t cast it. This means you can’t end it early, nor have it end by losing concentration.
