Shield of Missile Attraction 5e

December 16, 2023

Shield of Missile Attraction 5e

Armor (shield), rare (requires attunement)

While holding this shield, you have resistance to damage from ranged weapon attacks.

Curse. This shield is cursed. Attuning to it curses you until you are targeted by the Remove Curse spell or similar magic. Removing the shield fails to end the curse on you. Whenever a ranged weapon attack is made against a target within 10 feet of you, the curse causes you to become the target instead.

A shield is made from wood or metal and is carried in one hand. Wielding a shield increases your Armor Class by 2. You can benefit from only one shield at a time.

Commentary by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold

Not all curses are bad- the Shield of Missile Attraction has one such curse! You become an arrow magnet, but handle the arrows far better than your allies typically could. Neat!

  • You don’t need to attune to the shield to benefit from the basic “shield” properties, but do need to be attuned to it to gain the resistance to ranged weapon attacks and the curse.

  • The curse bypasses any targeting, ally or enemy; if you’re within 10 feet of a creature, you are the target of ranged weapon attacks instead of them.

  • Positioning defensively on backline allies while hurling ranged weapons can be a great method fo counteracting this downside, instead using it as a method for protecting your allies from ranged weapons.

  • If you engage a big bad, remember your ranger and rogue companions can’t attack it with ranged weapon attacks, agnostic to whether or not you’ve got the shield equipped.

  • You can only break the attunement using Remove Curse or similar effects.
