5e Race Reviews: Harengon

Harengon

by Prince Phantom

Both races that debuted in Wild Beyond the Witchlight are crazy good, the Fairy being potentially the best race in the game and the Harengon as one of the best non-flying races. The reason being that we just get a ton of great features, all of which happen to work well with just about any build, but especially for spellcasters.

Harengon Features

  • Hare-Trigger: A bonus to initiative is amazing, especially for spellcasters who have amazing control spells they’d like to cast before the enemies get a chance to act. This is comparable (but definitely slightly worse) to the Alert Feat, matching and eventually exceeding it at high levels.

  • Leporine Senses: Perception is the most called for skill in the game, and getting it for free here is great.

  • Lucky Footwork: You’d expect a feature like this to have limited uses, but no, this is an added d4 on any failed Dexterity save. It does cost our reaction, so you may not have it available every turn or you may wish to save it for something like the Shield spell, but more often than not you’ll be able to take advantage of this.

  • Rabbit Hop: This is a bonus action Disengage or an extra burst of movement, and it’s fantastic all around. Note that you can also use this to jump upwards, but beware of falling damage, as any fall greater than 10ft will deal damage and leave you prone. Also note that you can use this while prone, making this a great escape tool if a melee monster has you pinned down.

That’s four features, and all of them are bangers. Pretty much any spellcaster would love this as it provides mobility, utility, and many advantages in combat. Granted, nothing here is necessarily something you build around, but this race will work perfectly with just about anything you throw it on.

Final Rating: 5/5
