5e Race Reviews: Owlin

Owlin

by Prince Phantom

Silvery Barbs wasn’t the only powerful thing to come out of Strixhaven. Owlin have flight, and that makes them top tier alone, so we should really be ranking them in comparison to the other flying races. Let’s see how they stack up.

Owlin Features

  • Superior Darkvision: This is the only flying race with 120ft darkvision, which is actually even more helpful for a flying race than a normal one. With this, you can fly between 60-120ft above the ground at night, with you being able to see grounded creatures but they cannot see you. This gives advantage on attacks and disadvantage to attack you, which is big for ranged characters or spellcasters. A Gloom Stalker Ranger in particular would work perfectly with this playstyle, enhancing it by making you completely invisible to creatures that rely on darkvision. This also lets you be a very good nighttime scout for your party while still staying outside the range of enemy sight yourself. You may initially skim over this when reading this race, but this is the reason you play an Owlin rather than a different flying race.

  • Flight: This is why you’re here, and it takes up almost all of the power budget of this race. Our flight speed is also tied to our walking speed, meaning boosts to our speed by many spells and abilities will also apply to our fly speed.

  • Silent Feathers: Stealth is one of the best proficiencies to have and plays really well with the strategies I mentioned with our Superior Darkvision. It’s just one skill proficiency, so it’s not much to write home about, but if I had to pick one skill for this race to get it would be this one.

The Owlin doesn’t get much outside of their flight, but what they do get points them in a clear build direction. This is the flying race for builds that want to excel at stealth and take advantage of darkness, which applies to a surprisingly high number of builds. I’d still say it’s the third strongest flying race behind the Fairy and Winged Tiefling respectively, but it definitely has its own niche that it fulfills wonderfully.

Final Rating: 5/5
