5e Race Reviews: Vedalkin

Vedalkin

by Prince Phantom

I’m blue, daba-dee daba-dye. The blue men of Ravnica are a famously intelligent and dispassionate folk, valuing perfection above all else. They’re also one of the strongest defensive races in the game, and a great choice for just about any character. Let’s see why.

Vedalkin Features

  • Vedalkin Dispassion: Advantage on all mental saving throws. No strings attached, no hoops to jump through, just straight power. This is nearly as strong as genuine magic resistance (the old kind that affects all magic, not the new kind that only works on spells), and honestly might be more strong, it’s hard to tell. This will come up constantly and be the cornerstone of this race.

  • Tireless Precision: We get a skill and tool proficiency, and can add a d4 to the proficiencies we select. The only downside is that the skills on offer here aren’t the best. Arcana is needed for scribing scrolls, but you don’t make a check that needs the d4 to do that, just the proficiency. Sleight of Hand comes up as often as you want it to, but only certain types of characters are interested in those types of activities. The highest DC for a medicine check is 10, so we don’t need that. Performance almost never comes up, even when looking for opportunities to use it, and same for History. That leaves Investigation, which definitely isn’t a bad option, just make sure your DM has a good grasp on the difference between a perception check and an Investigation check, as the two often get confused at some tables.

  • Partially Amphibious: One hour of water breathing is nice, but since Water Breathing is a ritual spell available as early as level 5, this won’t be relevant very often.

You play a Vedalkin for Vedalkin Dispassion, period. Thankfully, it is a good enough feature to carry the race by itself. Honestly, after you play a few sessions and make use of that feature a few times, you’ll wonder how any of your characters ever survived without it. If you need your race to shore up your mental saves, you cannot do better than this.
