Periapt of Health 5e

July 22, 2023

Periapt of Health 5e

Wondrous Item, uncommon

You are immune to contracting any disease while you wear this pendant. If you are already infected with a disease, the effects of the disease are suppressed while you wear the pendant.

Commentary by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold

Everything about the art of Periapts of Health unnerve me, from the bone-like material composing the grasping hand to the two faces, one sad, one smug, on the heart-shaped ruby at its base. Mechanically, the Periapt of Health mitigates diseases, and while their aren’t many of these in the game, should you come across dangers ones without access to Lesser Restoration, a Periapt of Health may save the day.

  • 3rd level paladins have a passive version of this ability called Divine Health.

  • The Contagion spell makes up roughly a fourth of existing diseases in 5th edition with six unique options to choose from.

  • There are ten monstrous diseases specific creatures have- Aboleths, Bulezauses, Carnivorous Flowers, Death Dogs, Gas Spores, Diseased Giant Rats, Otyughs, Rutterkins, and Slaad each have a unique disease within their stats.

  • There are eight additional natural diseases beyond these: Bluerot, Cackle Fever, Frigid Woe, Mad Monkey Fever, Sewer Plague, Shivering Sickness, Sight Rot, and Throat Leeches.
