Ring of Free Action 5e

December 15, 2023

Ring of Free Action 5e

Ring, rare (requires attunement)

While you wear this ring, difficult terrain doesn't cost you extra movement. In addition, magic can neither reduce your speed nor cause you to be paralyzed or restrained.

Commentary by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold

Are you looking for free actions? Unfortunately, that’s not at all what this ring offers despite its name- instead, you’re free from being stuck, allowing you to take actions normally!

  • You can wear as many rings as you have fingers, with no other limitations beyond the regular magic item limitations like attunement.

  • A Ring of Freedom of Movement would be a better name for this ring, as it is close to that exact spell effect, but without being able to automatically escape nonmagical restraints and navigate freely underwater.

  • Difficult terrain isn’t the same thing as areas that cost you more speed to traverse; effects like Plant Growth aren’t codified as difficult terrain, meaning rules as written, you are still affected by its “slowing” effect.

  • Spells like Ray of Frost will still damage you when hit by them, you’ll simply be unaffected by the speed reduction.
